How-to Install Nvidia Drivers on Ubuntu 11.10

How to install nvidia drivers on Ubuntu (11.10)

Because no other site seemed to have the answers that I needed

1) add "nomodeset" to the grub bootloader (i.e at the end of the first linux entry)

> sudo nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg
e.g. linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-14-generic root=UUID=... ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 nomodeset

2) Download the current nvidia drivers from the official site
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

4) Stop X by

Uprooted Apple Tree: Update

So it seems my attempts at saving the apple tree has worked, it bounced back better then I expected, no doubt it will still be some time before any apple start to grow again, but the state of having an apple tree is better then starting from scratch again.

Testing QTM blogger

Testing a new desktop blogger since my other favorite gnome-blog program has unmet dependencies in 11.10

Astrophotography

Just launched a new page on astrophotography, right now there isn't a whole lot of information, but I will expand on it over the next few days/summer. It will be a how-to, DIY with some examples. The emphasis will be on amateur astrophotography on the linux desktop, from post-processing of darks, flats, bias and image stacking to image manipulation within gimp.
Anyways, stay tuned, clear skies!

Nautilus script to upload Images to twitpic & flickr

Here is a couple scripts that allow you to easily upload a picture to either twitpic/twitter or to your flickr account. Initially I was trying to use flickr2twitter, but its api was broken, probably in large part to twitters instability with third-party apps, but twitpic worked just fine.

My Uprooted Apple Tree

Well today I got out trying to save our apple tree that got uprooted in the last and late snow storm. Will it work? I don't know, but time will tell. The first thing I did was trim the whole thing down to the main trunk and a few twigs/branches. This was so that I could actually set it back in place, since it was so heavy, and so the remaining tree has a better chance of growing with presumably some damaged roots. I had dug out some of the dirt too where it had uprooted, giving it some room in the ground when I stood it up.

Statistics and Equilibrium Model

Two new videos to tell you about, the first one shows a single surface with a 'hole' in the middle, with 2000 randomly distributed particles across the surface. If a particle falls in the hole, the center box, then it is removed from the surface and the total number of particles drops. The second model takes the discarded particles from the first surface and moves them onto the second surface, and vice versa. The second model shows the particle-populations of the two surfaces approaching equilibrium. The first model shows the total population approaching zero.
